El Faro de Colon (the Columbus Lighthouse)

Welcome to El Faro de Colon. This is probably one of the only lighthouses not built on a coastline, but in the middle of the city. It was constructed in 1992 despite alot of controversy as it cost millions of much needed dollars to build. When the electricity in the city works, it emits a brilliant light into the sky, in the shape of a cross, that can be seen for miles. This edifice, though a tourist destination, is quite unpopular with the people.

The tombstone of Christopher Columbus.

Here lie the ashes of the illustrious Columbus.

The top of the statue.

Replicas of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Behind is an artist's rendition of how the Indians received the white colonizers.

The deep corridor with rooms on either side, referred to as "the Grand Canyon of the Dominican" by the people here.

Intricate architecture

Santo Domingo is a sea port city, important for trade and commerce during the colonial times and now.

The Dominican is a very catholic country. Their tribute to Christopher Columbus (Colon) reflects this.

Moi! Wow will I be glad to visit the hairdresser when I get home!
