Las Frutas (The fruit) Aqui

Las Piñas (or pineapple) and other fruit are EVERYWHERE. There´s fruit here that we´ve never heard of like:
-mamon (a red, fruit about the size of a small grapefruit. Inside is a mushy, white, refreshingly sweet liquid with a few black seets inside the size of small almonds),
-caña (which is pictured below) is literally sugar cane. It´s surprisingly healthy in it´s unprocessed form. It tastes very similar to watermelon.
-manzanas de oro are little green fruits the size of kiwi that turn yellow and soft when ripe. Their skins feel like mango skins.
-cajuilitos are redish, dark pink fruits eaten like an apple, and in the shape of a pear but smaller. Inside is a furry pear-like seed surrounded awhite firm fruit which is crunchy.
-There are...Nisperos, quenepas, caimitos, and more strange fruits, not to mention the usual bananas, papayas and other known tropical delights

Las Cañas are sooo yummy. Definitely not a ¨first date¨ food, though! It´s a little challenging not to make a mess when you have juice squirting into your mouth, then you chew the remaining part to suck the fruit out. Lastly, you have to find somewhere to spit the remains and continue eating. But trust me, it´s worth it. If you love watermelon, like me, you´d definitely like la caña. Unfortunately, the caña vendors look the most worn of all the vendors.

Also on the streets are coco vendors. They carry giant machetes (which you can´t see in this picture, but trust me it´s there). They swing the machetes at the cocoas hacking them in half and then scoop out the juice with a ladle type spoon for those who wish to purchase a drink.

La Bodega which is a little grocery store on the corner of the street where I´m staying. It carries a variety of fruits (of course) as well as a host of other small necessities--like phone cards, cerveza, y etc...

Mas frutas!
